A unique distribution model

Through our centralized fulfillment model (mail service), our specialty pharmacy receives a prescription, enters and verifies the order and dispenses the medication. Therapy management services are supported by a team of clinical experts within our integrated network of Customer Care centers. Another characteristic of the central fulfillment model is a sophisticated inventory control system, a cost-containment measure that may favorably impact pricing for payors. This system also helps ensure patients’ access to medications.

To complement the central fulfillment model, many specialty medications are distributed through Walgreens retail pharmacy network using a local fulfillment approach. In this model, prescriptions are brought to a local Walgreens pharmacy where order entry, verification and dispensing take place. In these cases, therapy management services are also provided by our network of Customer Care centers.

Specialty medications can also be administered in the home by a home health agency where extensive clinical support is provided by visiting nurses, often contracted through Walgreens-OptionCare.
