Information for families of newly diagnosed children

"Your child has hemophilia."

Those first words can be shocking. You want nothing more than your child to be healthy, but the initial diagnosis can make you feel anger, resentment, guilt, depression and confusion.

Rest assured, those feelings are quite common. So, where do you go from here? Here are some tips:

  • Learn as much as you can about your child's bleeding disorder.
  • Use the Web to find resources and support.
  • Contact your local hemophilia chapter through the National Hemophilia Foundation.
  • Make an appointment with your hemophilia treatment center.
  • Find as many helpful tips as you can to better understand your child's therapy and to make life easier.

Home infusion provider

In addition to finding a hematologist and hemophilia treatment center, you will also need to choose a home infusion provider. A home infusion provider plays an important role in the continuous care of your child.

The home infusion provider is responsible for providing factor and supplies, nursing as needed, infusion training, reimbursement guidance and other support services.

Because a home infusion provider plays such a large role, it's important to choose a provider wisely.

Being new to the bleeding disorders community, you might not know what to look for in a provider. To help, we've compiled a list of questions to ask a home infusion provider.
