Fatigue

Fatigue (overextreme tiredness) may be the result of a variety of causes, including anti-cancer medications, poor nutrition, or stress.

Fatigue symptoms include:

  • Difficulty concentrating or feeling motivated
  • Feelings of heaviness in your arms and legs
  • Feelings of sadness, irritability and frustration
  • Difficulty doing everyday things, such as showering
  • Lack of energy
  • Shortness of breath

Fatigue does not necessarily mean your cancer is getting worse or that your treatment is not working. Fatigue is neither a sign of weakness nor a lack of willpower/determination.

While fatigue is just another part of cancer treatment, it can have a significant effect on your life. Recognizing and managing fatigue can help you maintain your energy for everyday activities ad ongoing treatment.

Tell your doctor

Only you know how much fatigue is affecting you. It's up to you to tell your doctor about your fatigue. Your doctor may ask you when your fatigue started, whether it has become more severe and what factors relieve the symptoms or exacerbate them.

Your doctor may check for medical problems that can cause fatigue, including anemia and thyroid problems.
