FAQ: Gleevec®
Following are answers to some common questions patients may have while taking Gleevec®.
Do I need to swallow this medication whole?
If you are not able to swallow Gleevec® whole, you may dissolve Gleevec® in a glass of water or apple juice. Use approximately 50 milliliters of liquid for a 100-milligram tablet and 200 milliliters of liquid for a 400-milligram tablet.
Should I take this medication with food?
Yes. Take Gleevec® with your meal and drink a large glass of water to help reduce the chances of an upset stomach.
Can I drink coffee or other caffeinated drinks with Gleevec®?
Caffeine is not restricted when taking Gleevec®, but you should talk to your doctor about how much caffeine, if any, is safe for you to consume during your treatment.
Tip: Caffeine can irritate your digestive system and worsen medication side effects such as diarrhea and fatigue.
Tip: Remember that caffeine is not just in coffee; it is also contained in many teas and soft drinks.
Can I go in the sun while taking Gleevec®?
Yes, but be sure to protect your skin by applying sunblock with an SPF of 30.
Tip: Using Gleevec® might lead to dry skin and exposure to the sun may lead to a rash and sunburn.
Can I drink alcohol with this medication?
Alcohol is not restricted when taking Gleevec®, but you should talk to your doctor about how much alcohol, if any, is safe for you to consume during your treatment.
Can I take this medication with milk?
Milk is not restricted when taking Gleevec®.
Tip: If you have diarrhea; you may find it helpful to avoid milk and other dairy products, which can irritate your digestive system.
Can I take this medication at the same time as my with other medications?
Yes, but be sure to check whether other medications you are taking, including herbal supplements, have any restrictions.
Tip: Follow all directions and either consult your pharmacist or your doctor if you are unsure about how and when to take your medications.
I missed a dose. What should I do next?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not double up on your medication to make up for a missed dose.

Does Gleevec® interact with grapefruit products?
Yes, so you should avoid all grapefruit products while taking this medication.
