Following are answers to some common questions patients may have while taking Tarceva®.

Do I need to swallow this medication whole?

Yes. Swallow your Tarceva® pill whole, with a full glass of water. Do not chew the pill.

Tip: If you have trouble swallowing pills consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Should I take this medication with food?

No. Take Tarceva® either one hour before or two hours after eating a meal.

Tip: If you take Tarceva® with food, it may increase your chance of developing side effects.

Can I drink coffee or have other caffeinated drinks with Tarceva®?

Caffeine is not restricted when taking Tarceva®, but you should talk to your doctor about how much caffeine, if any, is safe for you to consume during your treatment.

Tip: Caffeine can irritate your digestive system and worsen medication-related side effects such as diarrhea and fatigue.

Tip: Remember that caffeine is not just in coffee; it is also contained in many teas and cola drinks.

Can I go in the sun with this medication?

To help prevent skin reactions, it is best to avoid sun exposure when taking Tarceva. Tarceva® might cause skin dryness and sun exposure might lead to a rash or sunburn.

Tip: If you must be in the sun, wear a wide-brimmed hat and protective clothing. You should also apply sunblock appropriate for sensitive skin (with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) with an SPF of at least 15.

Can I drink alcohol with this medication?

Alcohol is not restricted when taking Tarceva®, but you should talk to your doctor about how much alcohol, if any, is safe for you to consume during your treatment.

Tip: Tarceva® may increase the risk of liver problems and liver failure. Consuming alcohol when taking Tarceva® might create additional risk for liver problems.

Tip: Alcohol can also irritate your digestive system and worsen medication side effects such as diarrhea and mouth sores.

Can I take this medication with milk?

Yes, but if you have diarrhea, you may find it helpful to avoid milk and other dairy products, which can irritate your digestive system.

Can I take this medication at the same time as my other medications?

No. Taking Tarceva® with other medications and herbal supplements can prevent the medication from working properly in your body.

Tip: Follow all directions and consult your pharmacist or doctor if you are unsure about how and when to take your medications.

I missed a dose. What should I do next?

If you miss a dose, take your regular dose the next day. Do not take two doses to make up for a missed dose.

Tip: Tell your doctor if you miss a dose of Tarceva®.

Does Tarceva® interact with grapefruit products?

Yes, you should avoid all grapefruit products while taking Tarceva® as they impact the medication's ability to work.
