Following are answers to some common questions patients may have while taking Xeloda®.

Do I need to swallow this medication whole?

Yes and always swallow with a full glass of water

Tip: Do not crush your Xeloda® pills. The medication has a special coating to mask the bitter taste. The coating also minimizes the risk of chemotherapy exposure in handling the medication.
Tip: If you have trouble swallowing pills, talk with either your doctor or pharmacist.

Should I take this medication with food?

Yes.

Tip: Take Xeloda® within 30 minutes of finishing a meal. Most people take the drug after breakfast and dinner.

Can I drink coffee or have other caffeinated drinks when taking this medication?

Caffeine is not restricted when taking Xeloda®, but you should talk to your doctor about how much caffeine, if any, is safe for you to consume during your treatment.

Tip: Caffeine can irritate your digestive system and worsen medication-related side effects such as diarrhea and fatigue.

Tip: Remember that caffeine is not just found in coffee; it is also contained in many teas and soft drinks.

Can I go in the sun when taking this medication?

Yes, but be sure to protect your skin with by applying sunblock with an SPF of at least 30.

Tip: Xeloda® might make your skin dry and sun exposure might lead to either a rash or sunburn.

Can I drink alcohol when taking this medication?

Alcohol is not restricted when taking Xeloda®, but you should talk to your doctor about how much alcohol, if any, is safe for you to consume during your treatment.

Tip: Alcohol can irritate your digestive system and worsen medication-related side effects such as diarrhea and mouth sores.

Can I take this medication with milk?

Milk is not restricted when taking Xeloda®.

Tip: If you have diarrhea; you may find it helpful to avoid milk and other dairy products, which can irritate your digestive system.

Can I take this medication at the same time as my other medications?

Yes, but check whether other medications you are taking have any restrictions. Be sure to inquire about herbal supplements.

Tip: Follow all directions and speak with your pharmacist or doctor if you are unsure about how and when to take your medications.

I missed a dose. What should I do next?

If you miss a dose of Xeloda®, do not take the missed dose. Take your next dose as scheduled, and then continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not double up on your medication to make up for a missed dose. Ask your doctor for more information if you are unsure about how to proceed after missing a dose.

Does Xeloda® have any known potentially serious interactions with grapefruit products?

No.
