Why are my medications called specialty?

Specialty medications are used to treat chronic (long-term), life-threatening or rare conditions. Additionally, specialty medications may:

  • Be given by infusion (intravenously) [IV], injection, or taken orally
  • Cost more than traditional medications
  • Have special storage and handling requirements
  • Need to be taken on a very strict schedule
  • Have support programs and services available to help patients receive the most benefit from their medication

Where do I pick up my specialty medication?

Depending on the medication and your prescription coverage, you can either have your medication be shipped right to your door, your doctor's office or pick it up at your local Walgreens.

What information do I need to share with the pharmacists at the Customer Care Center to receive your support services?

You just need to provide us with information about your condition and therapy. It's that simple! Our Care Team of pharmacists and nurses will work closely with you throughout treatment-from providing educational materials and teaching you how to administer your injections to answering any questions about your condition, your medication, and its potential side effects.

Will these support services replace the medical care I'm receiving from my doctor?

No. Our support services are not intended to replace the medical care you receive from your doctor. We are an extension of your medical team, so we work closely with them to help ensure you get the best results from the medication that your doctor prescribed. As part of that collaboration, we also alert your doctor of any medication doses you may have missed throughout therapy. Our top priority is to make sure your treatment is successful.

Do I need to inform Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy of any changes in my therapy?

Yes, we would appreciate hearing from you regarding any changes in your therapy to prevent unnecessary medication being shipped to you. Please also call us with any changes to your name, home address, telephone number or insurance provider.

If I am traveling, what do I need to do to make sure I have enough medication?

For the most part, you should be able to get your prescription anywhere in the United States and Puerto Rico. However, your prescription coverage may be different in every state, depending on your coverage. Please let your doctor and our pharmacists know that you are traveling. We will be glad to coordinate all the details for you to avoid any medication interruption.

Do you have any educational materials in Spanish?

Yes, we offer educational materials in Spanish for Crohn's disease, hepatitis, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Call our Customer Care Center toll free at 888-782-8443 if you would like these materials to be mailed to your home.

Can I have my prescriptions labels printed in my preferred language?

For greater convenience, Walgreens stores can print your prescription labels in as many as 14 languages, including Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Ask our pharmacists for details.
