Cystic fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that causes mucus in the body to become thick, dry, and sticky. This sticky mucus builds up and causes problems in many of the body's organs, especially the lungs and the pancreas. When CF affects the pancreas, as it often does, the body does not absorb enough nutrients needed to grow and to thrive. Most people with CF need to eat a high-calorie diet and take replacement vitamins. Many take pancreatic enzyme replacements to help them absorb nutrients.

What are the complications of CF?
People who have CF can have serious breathing problems and lung disease. They can also have problems with digestion and nutrition, leading to growth and development issues. There is no cure for CF, and the condition generally gets worse over time. However, life expectancy has increased greatly over the years, and many who receive treatment live into their forties and beyond.
What can I do to better manage cystic fibrosis?
Treatment varies depending on the stage of the disease, the health problems CF is causing, and how your body responds to treatment. Many people with CF receive medication, respiratory therapy, nutritional therapy, and other special care.
What treatments are available?
If you have CF, you should learn as much as you can about the condition and work closely with your doctors to learn how to manage it. Ongoing medical care is key. Clearing mucus from the lungs daily is an important part of CF treatment. Chest physical therapy, which uses vigorous percussion on the back and chest to dislodge thick mucus, can help with airway clearance. Mechanical devices that stimulate mucus clearance can also help. Other treatments include mucus-thinning medication and antibiotics to treat infections. Reducing infections is important, as mucus can trap bacteria, which can lead to infections that may cause lung damage.
Can CF affect my ability to have children?
CF can affect fertility in men and women. Talk to your doctor if you are planning a pregnancy, wish to become pregnant, or if you are pregnant.
